Just to clarify--all I'm looking for is which song on each album was first performed, not necessarily when that first performance was. (If someone out there can cite without help when the first performance was of each first-performed song, then wow! Stratocaster?)

I guessed right for a few of the albums based on having heard early performances of certain songs, but in none of those cases was the performance I had heard the very first.

UJB is indeed an interesting case, but the earliest UJB jams I've heard came months after the earliest performance of the first-performed song on Workingman's Dead.

Lou--not sure I follow for UJB...I was thinking the early November, 69, jams were in advance of the song in its complete state...since they were putting together WMan's in Dec/Jan of 70, is that not true? Had the complete song been completed by say, October, 69? I have no clue...

Cool stuff...

I meant that there's another song from Workingman's Dead that was performed live a few months before the earliest UJB jam I've heard.

BTW, thanks in this time of forum trouble for sticking around and being consistently positive, and supportive of others, and dead-related.

Ah yes--now I see what you mean. I was just obsessing about UJB alone. What I have found interesting, noted by many before, is how different some of the songs of that year are when first done. EG, the first SugarMag, first CJones and even first NewSpeedway, are each done very slowly, with different approaches to the singing, etc. Assume it's that we get used to the "final" approach because I don't care for them in those early incarnations (not bad, just too different).
